I have learned so much over the years I have been training. I think the most important
things I have learned are: using my voice, leadership, and the confidence I have found through
martial arts. I have also learned perseverance through challenges that have come up in my life. I
have had a lot of change happen recently in my life and one of the only constants that I have had
is karate and it has helped me so much.

I didn’t get here alone!
Loads of people have helped me on my journey to black belt and I would like to say
thank you to all of you. I would like to thank my instructors, past and present, for being patient
with me and the countless hours you have spent teaching. I also want to thank my parents for
paying for my training, driving me back and forth, and being supportive of my dreams. All of my
friends have also been so helpful whether it was helping me with a technique or listening to me
struggle to explain what martial arts is, you all have done so much for me. I am so grateful for all
of you.
What Black Belt represents

To me a black belt represents more than just a 2-inch piece of fabric you tie around
your waist. It shows your skill, loyalty, and so many other things. The 5 L’s taught in training (Love, Don’t let it be a Lie, Loyalty, Lots more to Learn, and Longevity) really do apply to anything you truly earn in life. I think that a black belt represents new opportunities and more learning. Being a black belt means you have proven yourself to be of good character, and your actions also reflect that.
