When my son expressed interest in martial arts, I started the search for a place with a children’s program with a focus on good values but also offered a comprehensive adult program. After extensive research, we landed on Kaizen International Black Belt Academy. A free introductory class allowed us to get a feel for the program, meet some instructors and staff, and easily conclude that this was a good fit for us. My son signed up right away. After watching his growth and experience, my daughter and I were eager to join as well.
This decision was one of the best I’ve made in years.
My son started a year before my daughter built up the confidence to step into class. In that time, we noticed huge character growth. He had always been kind and empathetic, but we watched those traits grow with the focus the school places on traits such as teamwork, honesty, and respect. My daughter also has a strong caring personality, but it was often hidden underneath her social anxiety. After a lot of encouragement from our family, as well as the instructors, we finally got her on the mat. It has been amazing watching her come into her own. She went from hiding behind my leg to raising her hand to lead parts of class within a few months. That growth has continued off the mat as well.
The day we got my daughter to sign up was also the day I decided to finally join myself.

Focusing on my personal self-care and growth
As a stay-at-home mom struggling with anxiety and low self-esteem for several years, I had fallen into a pattern of ignoring my own needs, making me feel as though I was losing my sense of self. I knew I needed to find something for myself, but social anxiety held me back from taking that step forward. I doubted myself and felt inadequate in various aspects of my life. Stepping onto the mat for the first time was nerve-wracking, but a class full of supportive classmates and enthusiastic instructors quickly turned it into a fun, enjoyable experience. Martial arts offered more than just self-defense skills; it became an essential part of my self-care routine and personal growth journey.
Innumberable benefits
The benefits of my martial arts journey have been innumerable. Consistent physical activity and concentrative practices are excellent for managing stress and anxiety. Training gives me a place to focus on myself, separate from my responsibilities as a mom. Structured curriculum and regular testing allows me to set and achieve goals regularly, boosting my confidence with regular accomplishments. The amazing community fostered in this dojo is full of good people who are all supportive when you make mistakes and cheer on your successes.
Physical challenges, supportive community, combined with personal achievements has played a crucial role in helping me work through my anxiety and build confidence. Now, I eagerly anticipate going to class. I’m proving to myself that I can overcome challenges while spending time with a great group of people and giving time to myself. I’ve become more present in my daily life and more confident in myself.
