Set Habits that Lead to Success

Ready for Success

Committing to martial arts training offers your family a great opportunity to develop beneficial success habits. There are many benefits, both mental and physical, that come with martial arts training, but achieving your martial arts goals is only possible if you SHOW UP, even on days when motivation is lacking. Building a habit of attending class consistently demands intention, commitment, and a positive mindset.

Martial arts training is a journey. Regardless of why you (or your child) started, to achieve what you are aiming for, you need to commit to your training by setting the habit. Every class is an opportunity to learn and grow. It is important to attend every class you can. Missing class means missing crucial opportunities for growth.

Faithful attendance is one of the most important things you can do to help you, or your child, succeed.

Be a Goal-Setter

Set Short-Term and Long-Term Goals: Short-term goals serve as immediate, achievable targets that guide you towards your ultimate long-term aspirations.

It’s important to remember the reasons why you embarked on this journey: Whether your goal is to become stronger, gain confidence, or improve your discipline, focus, or self-control, showing up at least twice a week is the crucial first step.

As you progress, you’ll set new goals: Every achievement contributes to self-improvement not only within martial arts but also in your life outside the dojo, helping you remain on a path of positive growth.

Stick to a Schedule

Treat Karate classes with the same importance as any other crucial appointment: Dedicate specific time slots in your calendar for each class, ensuring they remain a non-negotiable aspect of your schedule.

Consistency plays a vital role: aim to attend classes at the same time and on the same days every week. This consistency helps establish a rhythm, making it easier to incorporate karate into your lifestyle.

We Get It!

Unexpected events can sometimes disrupt your schedule, making it challenging to attend every class. Instead of viewing these missed sessions as setbacks, consider them opportunities to overcome and grow by taking ownership of your training with alternative options like using your videos and curriculum to practice at home. The important thing is to remain engaged with your training by adapting your routine as needed to reinforce your success habits. Find a time to make up class another day if attending your regular class isn’t possible.

While it’s easy to find excuses to skip a class, you’ll be glad you made the decision to make your training a priority, as it will lead you one step closer to your goals.

Prepare Ahead to Get to Class (on time!)

Organize your gear the night before: Lay out your karate uniform, belt, gear, and training weapons in a designated spot or in your gear bag, making them easy to grab and go.

Aim to arrive 10 minutes before your scheduled class time to account for delays from traffic and to allow plenty of time to dress and gear up.

This practice teaches:

  • Punctuality
  • Responsibility
  • Respect
  • Dedication
  • Preparedness

Embrace a Positive Mindset

As with any journey, there may be days when you feel discouraged or unmotivated. Recognize that these setbacks are not only normal, they are an important part of learning self-discipline and perseverance. Focus on the joy and self-improvement that accompany your training. This approach can transform your practice sessions into fulfilling experiences rather than mere obligations. Remember that showing up, especially when it’s difficult, is a victory showcasing your resilience, dedication, and ability to DO HARD THINGS.

Keep a Training Journal

Keeping a training journal to document your experiences, thoughts, and feelings can be a powerful tool for tracking your progress and maintaining your commitment to regularly attending classes.

Reflecting on your experiences after each class can be incredibly beneficial: Take a moment to contemplate what you learned to enhance your understanding and awareness.

Review your journal often to remind yourself of the benefits of training and all that you have accomplished. Celebrate your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem, every choice reinforces your success habit!

Find a Training Buddy

Though martial arts is a personal journey, it is not a solitary pursuit – it’s a team effort and social experience.

Engage in conversations with the people you train with, share your goals, and seek feedback.

A supportive community can motivate you to attend classes regularly and provide a sense of belonging that enriches your training. Get connected through participation in community events!

Embrace Your Journey

The journey of martial arts is a continuous path. Welcoming both victories and setbacks as essential lessons, this journey goes far beyond simply achieving ranks or mastering skills. It highlights self-improvement, physical advancement, and the development of mental strength. Every small advancement signifies a meaningful leap toward mastering the art of discipline and perseverance in life.
