I started my Kenpo journey in January of 2023. I was looking for something that would benefit me both physically and mentally. Funnily enough, watching The Matrix is what first brought martial arts to my mind. Eventually, I met a friend who trained here at Kaizen IBBA. He told me about the school and how wonderful of a place it was to learn. I kept it on my list of options, and out of all the schools in Fort Collins, Kaizen felt like the best fit for me.
I came in for an intro lesson, (which was awesome), it was completely free and gave me a chance to meet the instructors, learn more about the program, and ask questions in person. Everyone was extremely kind, and it immediately felt like an environment where I could grow. For my birthday, my parents signed me up for a trial program. This was another great opportunity because I was able to try it out without making a full commitment–take some classes, get a feel for the environment, and even earn my first belt. Not only was the staff welcoming, but the students were too. It made sense why they called it an Ohana. Everyone knew each other, made time to connect, and I felt genuinely wanted and cared for by this community of people I had just met.

The instructors are amazing as well. They’ve never made me feel bad or embarrassed for not knowing something or for asking questions. They highly encourage curiosity and strongly emphasize that there is always more to learn.
Continuing my journey –
I’ve now been part of Kaizen’s Ohana for nearly three years and continue to train regularly. I’ve built wonderful relationships and grown in so many ways–my confidence, abilities, mental health, and physical health have all improved. Kenpo has really brought out the best in me. I’ve also learned to be patient with myself. There are times in your journey when you might feel like you’re not doing well or feel unmotivated, but it’s important to keep showing up. Those ups and downs are part of the learning process. Perseverance is one of the most valuable lessons I’ve learned, and over time, you really see the benefits of it.
Martial arts is a lifelong journey, and there is always room to grow in every aspect. I’m incredibly grateful to have found Kaizen and to be a part of this community. I’m excited to see where the rest of my journey takes me! 🙂
